"Tulipmania," with Loraine Campbell

A history of the tulip, which begins as a tiny wildflower in China that was collected by nomadic Turks, found its way to the castles of sultans during the Ottoman Empire, was cultivated, and traded into Europe. In the 1630s, tulip trading in the Netherlands went berserk and the bulbs became more valuable than gold and then rapidly went bust. From there, the bulbs ended up in the satchels of pioneers who settled New Amsterdam (later New York), and finally in Michigan backyards.
