Record Group 7: Gayde Brothers
Finding Aid
Peter Gayde, an emigrant from Wuerttemberg Germany, started
his cooper business in 1854. The cooper shop was located in the south wing of
Peter’s home. Aside from building barrels, Gayde made display boxes for fruits
and vegetables. This soon led to the sale of groceries, staples, woodenware,
crockery, paints, oils, and hardware. By 1870, Gayde had established a store on
Liberty St., called Peter Gayde’s Grocery and
Provision.
Peter’s sons, jAlbert and Edward,
became co-owners with their father. His son, William ventured out on his own. In
1895 William opened his butcher shop, just a few doors down from the Gayde
Brothers Grocery Store (re-named after the death of their father). In addition
to a variety of fresh & smoked meats, Gayde sold poultry and seafood, including
oysters. In 1945, due to an illness, Albert Gayde closed the Gayde Bro’s
Grocery, having been in business for 75 years. William Gayde’s Meat Market
closed in 1946.
